Need for Speed: Most Wanted U (Wii U): COMPLETED!

I am Most Wanted! As the saucy minx on the game purred to tell me. I beat the Konigseggsegssgg and took it down to claim it as my own, and that was it – fourteen hours of credits, followed by being dumped back in the game to play some more, only in an invisible car. And play some more I did. Firstly, to find all of the remaining jack spots (I had about 15 remaining – only one was difficult …

Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit (iPhone)

Lets just gloss over the fact there was a Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit game, and a sequel, about 10 years ago and get on to the rubbishing of the new one, yes? It’s rubbish. To be more specific, it’s a dull Chase HQ clone with awful stuttering problems (the game would pause for 5 seconds or more, sometimes!), a seemingly pointless handbrake turn (that rarely works anyway) and terrible rubber-banding. I played the first 6 events, didn’t really enjoy …

Need for Speed: Carbon (Demo) (360)

Oh lord. I thought the Sonic demo was bad enough. This is even worse. It’s jerky, it lurches all over the place like grandad after he’s been on the Guinness, and the handling is just all wrong. In Circuit Mode you can barely steer at all – it’s like you push the left stick as hard as it will go and it just about registers as slightly off-centre, and in Drift Mode it’s like you’re on ice and a slight …

Need for Speed: Most Wanted (Demo) (360)

Oh, this isn’t like Burnout at all, is it? It looks exactly the same, only with licenced cars. Played a race, which was pretty dull (no actual Burnouting or Takedowns), and then played a mode where you have to escape from the police, smash through roadblocks and stuff. It was pretty good fun, but the roadblocks seem to be positioned randomly and you appear to have to find them, rather than them just be where you’re driving to anyway. Overall, …

Need For Speed Underground 2

Put this on for a quick try. What an awful, awful game. Played a couple of races against the CPU, then some Drag races against a friend. What a stupid mode that is – you don’t even have to steer round corners! Then did a Sprint race, which was equally crap. Also tried Career mode, but the storyline (yes, a storyline) is pants and superfluous to the racing. As is everything else, even. And the graphics are rubbish. Lets never …

Speed cameras – money, not lives

Gosh. Two rants about speed cameras in a row. How petrolhead of me. There’s a road in Norfolk called the A47. It is, in fact, only one of two major roads in Norfolk, and runs east and west through the middle of the county. It’s a road I drive on almost every single day. The A47 is almost unique in this county, as sections of it are dual carriageway. That’s as close as we get to a motorway round these …

Super Mario Bros. Wonder (Switch): COMPLETED!

There was no doubt that I was going to instabuy a new Mario game. It might not be a sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, but New Super Mario Bros U was one of the best Mario games, if not, actually, the best and this is the first 2D outing for Nintendo’s pipeman since that came out, so I was hyped. All the new “wonder” effects shown in the trailer and Nintendo Direct, with crawling pipes and turning into a Goomba …

Time on Frog Island (Switch): COMPLETED!

Seems that “cosy” is an actual genre these days, and Time on Frog Island pretty much fits in that box – there’s no chance of death, no real time limits (a couple of A-B time trials aside), and seemingly no way to fail. The story follows you, a sailor who, having lost his wife (her having turned into a plant or something?) has shipwrecked on Frog Island. So called, because of all the frogs wot live there. And a toad. …

Burnout Paradise Remastered (PS4): COMPLETED!

I have always maintained that the best Burnout, is Burnout Paradise. And I was slightly concerned going into this that perhaps my memory is faulty and maybe the eleven years that have passed since I played the original version on the Xbox 360 have not been kind. I needn’t have worried – it’s still excellent. However, the passage of time has still had an effect. The main thing being that the massive open world map doesn’t feel massive any more. …

Phantasy Star (Switch): COMPLETED!

The Phantasy Star games are some of my very most favourite RPGs. Phantasy Star III was my first one, but I later played the original and, although it wasn’t quite the same, it was also excellent. Since those days, I’ve completed the first game several times – on the Master System originally more than once, in an emulator, and in the Game Boy Advance Phantasy Star Collection. But, loading it up briefly aside, not for over a decade. Until today. …
